Crazy stuff the roads here in Costa Rica are! We took an hour long drive up a 10 mile road to find a park that locals said we must see while near Manuel Antonio. Not only are the roads the steepest we have ever seen, they are in really poor shape with lots of ruts and potholes. What we found at the end of the road was well worth the wear and tear we put on our rental car!
The initial 5 miles of the road was driven along a dirt road that was cut straight through the palm oil plantations around here. There were workers with machetes every 100 yards or so. Not exactly sure what they were doing but they all commuted to work there on their scooter-like motorcycles. There were also small housing developments placed here and there along the road. Maybe to house some of the workers?
Came upon our first of 3 swinging bridges. The sign said it was about 450 feet long and 135 feet above the river below. Notice the width of the tread is only maybe 16 inches.
Not sure if the video shows how incredibly 'wobbly' these hanging bridges are but...
Come on Laurie! The next bridge looks like an easy one.
Hiked down into the gorge with water pouring into it from all directions. The cement path someone was nice enough to lay out for us was not even slippery.
Really cool but loud waterfall. As there was not a ton of water flowing the noise must have been amplified by the echoes off the gorge walls.
A nice spot to crack open the books and relax for a while. Really nice having the place all to ourselves.
Our third and final bridge was the one directly above our reading spot. Looks a bit ominous eh?
Before crossing the longest and highest bridge yet we decided to check out the facilities. Nice open air design was very nice. Maybe not so nice if other folks were around but...
We are not afraid of heights but this bridge had us 'swaying' in our shoes!
The obligatory selfie.
On our way back to the parking lot we ran into this wonderful swimming hole. Absolutely fabulous!
Once the roar of all the waterfalls faded into the distance we captured the sounds of the crickets or cicadas in the above video.
What would a day in Costa Rica be like without the love of a friendly dog?
When we arrived back at our car the only other traffic in the parking lot were two horses tethered to trees while their riders gabbed it up on a nearby bench. Our kind of traffic.
